Back in Jan 2024, I made a visit to The Embassy in Columbus GA to honor the Legacy of Dr John Henrik Clarke.

Dr. Clarke was a historian, professor, prominent Afro-centrist, and pioneer in the creation of Pan-African, African Studies, and professional institutions in academia’s staring in the late 1960s.

Dr Clarke was born on January 1 1915 in Union Springs Alabama however the family moved to Columbus GA to earn enough money to buy land.

Clarke left Georgia in 1933 to relocate to Harlem NY. He pursed Activism and scholarship. Clarke also served in the US Army during WWII.

Following WWII, Charke co-founded Harlem Quarterly, taught at the New School for Social Research. During the Black Power Movement, Clarke advocated for studies of the African American experience and place of Africans in world history.

Clarke was the professor of Black and Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College where he served as the founding chairman of the department. He was also the Carter G Woodson Distinguished Visiting Professor of African History at Cornell University Africiana Studies and Research Center.

Dr. Clarke passed away on July 16, 1998 and is interred at Green Acres Cemetery here in Columbus Ga.
